Sometimes rooms are small. It all comes down to how big the house is, how much land was available, how big the other rooms are, and so on. A combination of factors can mean that you end up with a space that is tiny. It often can’t be helped.
However, there are some wonderful and interesting ways to make that space feel so much bigger than it is so that you don’t feel all cooped up and uncomfortable. Here are some handy tips.
Color – The color you choose for your room can make it look either bigger than it really is, or much smaller. Choose wisely, and you could add a lot of ‘space’ to a room that doesn’t have much at all. It’s important to think before you paint. Choosing a lighter color rather than anything dark will immediately open up the room. It will almost feel as though the edges are being opened up outwards. Make sure there are no dark spots or shadows as the eye will be drawn to them and the illusion will be shattered. This technique works well because light colors reflect the light back out, whereas dark colors absorb it. The best colors to use are bright white or very light blue.
Windows – Allowing plenty of natural light into a room is another good way to make to seem bigger, airier, and more open. Not every room is going to have great views or lots of natural sunlight like a condo in Myrtle Beach would, but that doesn’t mean you can’t utilize what you do have. Don’t hang heavy drapes around windows or you will block out too much of the light.
Mirrors – Mirrors also make small spaces look bigger. Therefore you can easily use them in your interior design scheme, so it doesn’t appear as though you’re trying to fool the eye. The right placement is all-important. Light needs to be reflected onto the mirror to be reflected back out again, to give the illusion of a larger room. Mirrors close to windows are a great idea, as are mirrors hanging on the wall above a glass table.
Furniture – Furniture can be really useful when you’re trying to make your space look bigger. It can be especially handy if you find furniture that can double as storage, such as a coffee table with a shelf underneath or drawers in the side, or a sofa with pockets in the arms. That way, you can tidy your belongings away when you’re not using them, giving you lots more space. It’s also important not to buy furniture that overwhelms the room and is too dark, as any work you’ve done to create more space will quickly be reversed. Light colored furniture that doesn’t match the walls but complements them is best. The furniture itself doesn’t have to match, however, and it can be fun to search out individual eclectic pieces and use them simply because you like them.
