Ma Yansong’s MAD Architects has unveiled its latest architectural marvel, “The Never Hut,” at the 2024 Guangdong Nanhai Land Art Festival. Nestled in the idyllic Yanqiao Village of Nanhai District, Foshan City, this captivating installation seamlessly blends cultural heritage with a whimsical touch. The hut invites viewers to immerse themselves in a space that encourages contemplation and fosters a sense of community.
According to Ma Yansong, the essence of this project lies in capturing the freedom and wonder of childhood. It aims to provide a welcoming environment for the community to gather, reflect, and envision the future, creating a bridge between the past and what is yet to come.
Set against the backdrop of a historic village boasting over 600 years of rich history, The Never Hut breathes new life into a site that once served as a cherished playground for local elementary school children. By reinterpreting this space, MAD Architects honors the collective childhood memories of the community while revitalizing its surroundings with purpose and creativity.
The installation draws inspiration from Yanqiao Village’s iconic Qing Dynasty-era architecture, its winding river systems, and the grand banyan tree that stands sentinel at the entrance. The Never Hut, with its striking flying saucer shape and three “tentacles” made from local fishing nets, interacts with the environment, responding to the gentle breeze and creating a dynamic dance between movement and tranquility.
Beneath its expansive, colorful eaves, The Never Hut offers a shaded, circular area designed for rest, interaction, and connection. The vibrant hues of the structure stand in bold contrast to the historic backdrop, establishing a lively dialogue that bridges the gap between the past and the present.
Serving as both a functional gathering space and an artistic focal point, The Never Hut encourages community engagement. Visitors are invited to savor the simple pleasures of daily life, whether it’s enjoying a refreshing breeze, contemplating the village’s rich heritage, or marveling at the harmonious interplay of art and nature.
Ma Yansong describes The Never Hut as a vibrant tribute to creativity and togetherness — a sanctuary where the echoes of childhood memories are lovingly revived.
This installation expands upon MAD’s previous endeavors in the Nanhai District, including the acclaimed “Timeless Beacon,” which has graced Taiping Market since 2022 as a highlight of the “Art at Qiaoshan” series during the Guangdong Nanhai Land Art Festival.
Now open to the public as part of the Guangdong Nanhai Land Art Festival 2024, The Never Hut invites both locals and visitors to immerse themselves in its enchanting fusion of art, culture, and community.
