Berlin’s Oberschöneweide District is experiencing a revival, thanks in part to the presence of HTW university campus. As part of this regeneration effort, Sehw Architektur has designed a student apartment building called “Around the Corner,” providing cost-effective living spaces for students while contributing to the revitalization of the area.

Commissioned by Berlinovo, a city-owned housing company, Around the Corner comprises 159 student flats and serves as an initiative to establish affordable residential buildings in the area. The name itself suggests that the building acts as the cornerstone, concluding the existing block development and blending with the traditional architecture surrounding it.

One of the key features of the student housing is its monolithic façade created by sloped roof areas and smooth walls. The building is divided into two sections, with the rear clad in grey and the front in white. This division aligns the structure with the scale and proportions of the street and neighboring buildings. Ventilation points in the windows, highlighted in yellow, introduce a playful touch of color, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

Inside the apartments, a combination of wooden elements and white tones creates a neutral canvas that allows students to personalize and decorate the space according to their preferences. The design also emphasizes the importance of community, with the kitchens oriented towards shared zones. Expansive windows in these areas allow natural daylight to flood in, creating an open atmosphere that encourages social interaction among the residents.

The construction of Around the Corner not only provides much-needed affordable housing to students but also contributes to the revitalization of Berlin’s electrical district. By blending modern design elements with traditional architecture, the building establishes a dialogue with its surroundings and adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood.

Furthermore, the student apartments prioritize sustainability and efficiency. The use of natural light reduces the need for artificial lighting during the day, while the ventilation points ensure proper air circulation. These features not only contribute to a comfortable living environment but also align with Berlin’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
