Bold and Versatile: IKEA Honors Design Legends with the New Nytillverkad Collection

IKEA

The iconic designs of the 60s, 70s, and 80s are back and better than ever. IKEA‘s Nytillverkad collection, now in its sixth edition, resurrects beloved solitary chairs from these vibrant decades, breathing new life into mid-century modern classics. But that’s not all. The collection also introduces customizable shelves, playful textiles, and sculptural vases, each piece designed to make a bold statement. Launching globally in February 2025, Nytillverkad is set to captivate design lovers worldwide, offering a fresh perspective on timeless style.

Drawing inspiration from the IKEA archives spanning the 1960s to the 1990s, the latest Nytillverkad collection showcases bold, colorful designs that can be tailored to suit various styles and preferences. At the heart of this collection is an emphasis on seating, highlighted by the introduction of four new standalone chairs that blend nostalgia with contemporary flair.

Among the featured designers is Niels Gammelgaard, who presents his steel tube easy chair, MOFALLA. Originally introduced in the 1978 IKEA catalogue as the foldable COX chair, it has been reimagined for today’s aesthetic. Additionally, Gill Lundgren’s classic easy chair, formerly known as MILA from 1967, makes a comeback as the vibrant DYVLINGE swivel armchair, now dressed in a striking orange hue. The SOTENÄS armchair, which debuted in 1969 as PUCK, also returns, this time in a cheerful red.

Beyond the eye-catching chairs, the collection includes Niels Gammelgaard’s GUIDE shelving unit from 1985, reintroduced as BYAKORRE. This colorful open shelving unit features reversible shelves—white on one side and anthracite grey on the other—along with shelf edges available in a variety of colors, including blue, green, yellow, and red. Gammelgaard expresses his enthusiasm for the design, stating, “I love the idea that you can switch the mood in your home through design. This piece allows you to play and customize the shelf to your whim, whether you want bold colors or something more subtle.”

Karin Gustavsson, the creative leader of the Nytillverkad collection, emphasizes the transformative power of these pieces. “Simply adding one piece from this collection will make a statement, with items that can also change form and colour to fit each individual home,” says Karin Gustavsson, creative leader of the Nytillverkad collection.“We have pulled inspiration from four decades, reimagining the pieces to feel fresh and new. You will find a palette of bold colours, as well as softer, curvier accent pieces and playful prints to make every day that little bit more joyful.”

Renowned designer Erik Wørts’ NOVETTE benches from 1963 have been reimagined as the GUTTANE side and coffee tables. These pieces feature sturdy oak legs paired with oak veneer tabletops, striking a perfect balance between elegance and practicality. A distinctive ledge is incorporated into the design, cleverly preventing stray magazines and cups from tumbling off the edge.

The collection also showcases textiles, including the ÄNGSVITVINGE bed linen, which boasts a whimsical print of blue clouds set against a crisp white backdrop. This design draws inspiration from textile designer Sven Fristedt’s iconic blue and white pattern from 1973. Additionally, designer Anna Efverlund introduces her playful bed linen, KLIPPBRÄCKA, which is a black-and-white rendition of her popcorn pattern MODIG KORN from 1997. Her influence extends beyond textiles, as she adds softer elements to the collection with her curvy SNURRA glass vases from 1995, now reintroduced as KÄLLARHALS, adorned in vibrant yellow and orange hues.

The Nytillverkad collection is a tribute to vintage designs, thoughtfully reinterpreted to meet contemporary needs. The sixth installment of this collection will be available at IKEA stores worldwide and online, launching in February 2025.
