UNDUO Refurbishes A Turin Flat Mixing Present and Past

By mingling past and present, Italian practice UNDUO has recently refurbished this apartment in a detached house, in Turin’s art nouveau neighbourhood. Elements and styles from different ages are what makes the living spaces so rich and emotionally-charged. A feeling for contemporary modernity goes hand in hand with the chronicle of the family history.

The hallway configuration, characterized by a radial plan whose starting point is a noble hexagonal entrance hall, has remained the same, and by switching sleeping and living quarters the resulting layout reflects a more modern style.

The original floor tiles have been preserved and integrated with new floor solutions. Hungarian herringbone parquet, polychrome cementina tiled floor and mortar resin interwine with carefully studied decorations, following a precise artistic principle: the classic elegance of the wide hexagonal entrance hall, enhanced by the restored fresco, displays a colour continuity that is coherent with the remaining hallways and introduces to a wide range of colours and materials in the rooms. Furniture from several ages highlight the amazement at stepping into any room and the sense of chronicle narrating the history of three generations.
