CEBRA Architecture and LEGO Group to Create a 50,000-Square-Meter Innovation Campus in Billund

CEBRA Architecture is embarking on an exciting collaboration with the LEGO Group to launch a groundbreaking 50,000-square-meter Innovation Campus at the company’s headquarters in Billund, Denmark. This ambitious project is deeply rooted in creativity, as it has been designed with valuable input from employees who utilized LEGO bricks to visualize their future workspaces. This hands-on approach not only embodies the essence of innovation but also aligns perfectly with LEGO’s vision of fostering a dynamic, team-oriented environment.

The new campus will not only revolutionize workspace design but will also house one of the largest LEGO element libraries in the world, promoting imagination and sustainable design practices. Niels B. Christiansen, CEO of LEGO Group, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “I am thrilled to mark the beginning of the construction of another new campus as we continue to invest in attractive workplaces for our colleagues around the world.” He emphasized that the building’s design is not only creative but also reflects their commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.

Over an extensive 18-month consultation period, employees collaborated closely with CEBRA Architecture, using LEGO bricks to refine concepts that would lead to an inspiring and eco-friendly workspace. This innovative campus will accommodate more than 1,700 employees from product marketing, development, and design teams, bringing together over 600 LEGO designers under one roof. The facility will consist of six interconnected modules, each up to four stories high, featuring play zones, atriums, and green spaces that prioritize natural light to stimulate creativity and innovation. At its core, the campus will boast one of the largest LEGO element libraries, offering around 20,000 unique pieces in 70 colors, serving as a vital resource for designers in their creative and product development endeavors.

Sustainability lies at the heart of the Innovation Campus, where FSC-certified timber is utilized throughout its core and walls to minimize emissions. This building is meticulously crafted to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum standards, emphasizing energy efficiency, biodiversity, and water conservation through thoughtful planning of its geometry, height, and facade design. The incorporation of green spaces and abundant natural light highlights the LEGO Group’s dedication to creating an eco-friendly and stimulating workplace.

Scheduled to open in 2027, the Innovation Campus represents a significant continuation of the LEGO Group’s investment in its Billund headquarters, which currently employs over 5,900 individuals. This new addition will complement the LEGO Campus, inaugurated in 2022, and the forthcoming Kornmarken Campus, all part of the company’s vision for a world-class, collaborative environment for its global workforce.

Julia Goldin, CPMO of the LEGO Group, emphasizes the campus’s role as an inspiring workplace that reflects the modular design of LEGO bricks. With input from colleagues playing a crucial role in shaping the overall design, the Innovation Campus aims to nurture creativity, inclusivity, and the seamless exchange of ideas among its inhabitants.
