The Corrugated House project, led by monotrum, has successfully transformed a corrugated pipe structure into a unique accommodation facility. Originally built in 1965 by Kenji Kawai, this building has been recognized by DOCOMOMO as a significant Modern Movement structure in Japan. During the renovation process, the design team focused on not only preserving the historical value of the building but also creating a space where visitors can truly experience and engage with the architecture through an overnight stay.
The original design of the house featured a single open room constructed from corrugated pipes, with walls enclosing the ends and a floor in between. To adapt this space for guests, the design team had to introduce new walls to create separate rooms and sanitary facilities. By strategically placing these walls between existing structural elements, they were able to carve out distinct spaces while maintaining the integrity of the original design.
The newly constructed walls in the Corrugated House project are finished with dark brown wooden paneling, complementing the rough iron material of the corrugated pipes. Furniture pieces such as beds, desks, and air conditioner covers are crafted from dark brown-stained wood, creating a cohesive and harmonious design aesthetic. The intentional contrast between the two materials adds depth and character to the space, enhancing the overall experience for guests staying at this unique accommodation facility.
The hole underwent a complete transformation, becoming a sight to behold. With an oval canvas covering it, the hole was given a new lease on life by incorporating lighting inside. But that’s not all – the canvas was replaced with a translucent tent fabric, adding a touch of elegance to its appearance. The architectural team truly worked their magic, turning the once dormant hole into a functional and visually stunning light source.
The impact of the iconic wall light was taken to new heights by extending its reach. The guestrooms were designed with walls that featured permeable hollow polycarbonate panels. These panels allowed the light from the iconic wall to filter into the rooms, creating a mesmerizing ambiance and enhancing the overall aesthetic. It’s a brilliant way to bring the beauty of the wall light into every corner of the space.
The first floor was not left untouched in this remarkable transformation. Movable shelves were ingeniously designed to accommodate both board and box shelves, using off-the-shelf shelf posts with custom-fabricated brackets. Taking inspiration from this concept, a movable bracket light was created, perfectly matching the galvanized finish of the corrugated pipes.
This innovative approach involved reinterpreting the existing architectural elements and repurposing them to serve a new function. The result? A functional lodging space that preserves the unique charm of the corrugated house while providing an appealing and unforgettable experience for its guests.
