In this remodeling and interior design project, the Valencian firm DG Arquitecto, in partnership with Gosende Navarro studio, has revitalized an apartment nestled in the prestigious area of Valencia’s Historical District. This project has unearthed textures and shapes that had been concealed by years of renovations, breathing new life into a space that now reflects the aspirations of a family who traded “The Big Apple” for one of the finest cities to call home, as recognized by the New York Times.
GOB17 embodies the essence of transition and movement. The decision to leave “The Big Apple” for the Mediterranean is not merely a choice; it represents a complex journey filled with challenges. Recently, an increasing number of individuals have chosen to traverse the ocean in search of new beginnings, with many selecting Valencia—a city that consistently ranks among the best places to live. Known for its inviting atmosphere, walkable streets, and delightful weather, Valencia also boasts a rich tapestry of festive traditions.
This project, situated in the heart of the city’s historic core, poignantly mirrors the contemporary migration trends. Once hidden beneath layers of poorly executed renovations, the apartment now stands as a symbol of the harmonious fusion between modern design and the city’s deep historical roots. The architects have skillfully stripped away the remnants of time, revealing the original architectural essence of the space.
Through this thoughtful restoration, the past is honored while simultaneously crafting a modern living environment that is both stylish and practical. Cities exist at specific moments in their evolution, constantly transforming alongside their inhabitants. This dynamic interplay compels individuals to adapt as the urban landscape shifts. In this narrative, a family consisting of a couple and their spirited puppy embarks on a journey to exchange the calculated rationalism of American Mid-Century design for the rich tapestry of Mediterranean culture. After a thorough briefing and an in-depth analysis of their needs, the search for the perfect property commenced. They explored numerous options until they discovered a true gem nestled within the Historical District. This remarkable building, dating back to the 19th century, is situated on a unique corner near the picturesque River Turia park. With its two prominent façades and a serene interior courtyard brimming with trees, the structure’s original layout is both chaotic and intriguing, harmonizing with its surroundings and asserting its presence in the neighborhood.
It is amusing to reflect on how such distinctive and unconventional spaces were precisely what Commissioners Randel Jr., Morris, Rutherfurd, and De Witt typically avoided when designing Manhattan’s grid. Their approach ensured uniformity in light and air for all buildings, adhering to a perfectly rational plan that left little room for spontaneity or creativity. In contrast, the family’s chosen property embraces the irregularities of its design, celebrating the organic flow of life within its walls.
The project aims to weave together these diverse elements, not only visually connecting the spaces but also generating a sense of movement throughout the environment. Two primary volumes are introduced to guide visitors, drawing their gaze and allowing the stark, urban presence of the city to blend seamlessly with the lush, green inner sanctuary. These new structures maintain a respectful distance from the existing building, allowing its original features to remain visible and appreciated, creating a dialogue between the old and the new.
The materiality of the space presents a complex interplay rooted in a complementary duality. On one hand, the original construction stands as a solid and weighty presence, reminiscent of a Roman peristyle, defining a central area that invites exploration. This enclosed environment is designed to be permeable, allowing light, sight, and movement to flow freely, creating dynamic transitions between different spaces. The preexisting elements are adorned with an abstract matte white finish, which serves to balance the heaviness of the structure and imbue it with a sense of timelessness.
Conversely, the newly introduced elements adopt a more contemporary and understated aesthetic. The flooring and custom cabinetry are meticulously crafted to support functionality while fostering a warm atmosphere. This inviting ambiance is achieved through a carefully selected natural material palette, which not only highlights the building’s noble character but also offers a rich tactile experience.
The integrated furniture pieces feature oak veneer, while the flooring boasts a terracotta straw finish, contributing to the overall warmth of the environment. The ivory tones of the quartzite harmonize beautifully with the wood, complementing the white of the original walls. Together, these materials create a cohesive visual narrative that enhances the space’s character.
Ultimately, the combination of these elements results in a harmonious blend of golden tones that reflect off the white finish of the original construction.
