DS N°8: A Stunning Homage to French Coachbuilding and Aero-Efficiency

DS Automobiles

DS Automobiles continues its legacy of innovative design and performance with the introduction of the N°8. This latest creation, inspired by the groundbreaking DS AERO SPORT LOUNGE concept, is a stunning homage to French coachbuilding and a bold statement in the pursuit of aero-efficiency. The N°8 seamlessly blends the avant-garde spirit of its iconic predecessors, the DS of 1955 and the SM of 1970, with the cutting-edge design language that has characterized the brand since its inception.

The name ‘No.8’ signifies a new standard in the brand’s nomenclature, reminiscent of luxury labels like Chanel. It builds upon the legacy of the DS 3, DS 4, DS 7, and DS 9, yet it stands out with a bolder presence. The brand describes this electric vehicle as a ‘manifesto for the French Art of Travel,’ highlighting its remarkable aerodynamic design and an impressive claimed range of 469 miles.

With its high sides and low roof, the DS N°8 boasts a fastback silhouette, featuring four doors—two of which are cleverly concealed. The distinctive lighting design adds to its allure, while the overall aesthetic is a striking representation of what an ‘SUV coupé’ should be, setting it apart from the less harmonious designs of competitors like Mercedes and BMW.

Underneath its elegant exterior, the DS N°8 shares many components with the Peugeot e-3008, yet it presents a lower and sleeker profile. Notable features include an illuminated grille, the innovative ‘DS LuminaScreen,’ and the extensive use of the ‘Clous de Paris’ pattern, a raised embossing technique inspired by the watch industry. At the rear, the lights extend to the edges of the body, complemented by a deep vertical element that descends to the bumper, while the duotone paintwork—featuring a glossy black bonnet and roof—adds a striking contrast to the body color.

The expansive dashboard of the car accentuates its impressive width, featuring a central information screen elegantly positioned on a backlit ‘shelf’. The interior is adorned with luxurious Nappa leather, complemented by brushed aluminium and intricate patterns that evoke the essence of classic French luxury and Art Deco design. A distinctive four-spoke ‘X-shaped’ steering wheel, embellished with embossed inserts, adds a unique touch, while the sound system and air vents are seamlessly integrated into the overall aesthetic.

Ambient lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing the interior, providing structure and depth to the surfaces. This sophisticated lighting system, combined with direct heating features like the DS Neck Warmer in the headrest, ensures comfort without relying on energy-consuming fans and blowers during chilly days. The thoughtful design elements create a warm and inviting atmosphere, making every journey a pleasure.

Many of the striking design features, both inside and out, draw inspiration from DS’s recent concept cars, such as the asymmetric DS X E-Tense and the DS Aero Sport Lounge. While the final version of the No.8 has moderated some of the more radical concepts, it remains distinctively unique, firmly establishing DS’s commitment to redefining first-class electric travel.

DS Automobiles recently paid tribute to the legendary Citroën SM coupe from the 1970s with the unveiling of the SM Tribute, further solidifying its commitment to honoring its heritage while pushing the boundaries of automotive design.
