Blurring Boundaries: Light and Life in Kart Projects’ House B

House B: Translucent Light & Modern Renovation in Melbourne by Kart Projects

Pier Carthew

Melbourne‘s inner-city terraces, with their narrow footprints and rich histories, often present a unique challenge: how to reconcile the demands of contemporary family life with the preservation of heritage character. Kart Projects‘ House B, a renovation for a young family, tackles this challenge with a bold yet sensitive approach, transforming a formerly shadowed and cluttered residence into a luminous and dynamic home.

The initial predicament was a familiar one: a classic terrace burdened by decades of haphazard additions, resulting in a dark and fragmented interior. Kart Projects’ response was not to overwhelm the existing structure, but to surgically introduce a contemporary extension that prioritizes light and spatial efficiency. Respectfully acknowledging the terrace’s street presence, the new addition dips gracefully over the living areas before rising again at the rear, a clever maneuver that minimizes overshadowing and optimizes natural light within a newly created internal courtyard.

The defining feature of this extension is undoubtedly its translucent glass wall. This ingenious element acts as a luminous membrane, bathing the living spaces in diffused daylight. It’s a subtle yet powerful gesture, blurring the boundaries between inside and out. The glass, while providing privacy from the street, allows for a tantalizing glimpse of the activity within, a soft, abstract rendering of daily life.

Instead of opting for an expansive, budget-draining extension, Kart Projects adopted a strategy of spatial economy. By minimizing the footprint and creating multifunctional, interconnected spaces, they were able to concentrate resources on high-quality detailing and a refined material palette. This approach is evident in the seamless integration of spaces and the meticulous attention to detail, a testament to the project’s low-cost, high-impact philosophy.

The home is thoughtfully divided into distinct zones. The heritage terrace, meticulously restored to highlight its original ornamentation, houses the children’s bedrooms and guest accommodations. This respectful nod to the past is sharply contrasted by the bright, stripped-back new spaces, where steel framing, expansive glazing, and warm plywood joinery create a distinctly contemporary atmosphere. The transition between old and new is clearly articulated by a full-width opening, marked by an expressed steel frame, a bold yet elegant delineation.

Materiality plays a crucial role in defining the character of House B. Blocks of color and texture are strategically employed to distinguish different elements, creating a visually engaging and cohesive whole. The project also demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness. The owners’ active participation in the construction process, coupled with the repurposing of materials like the original bricks, significantly reduced costs and minimized waste.

House B is more than just a renovation; it’s a carefully orchestrated dialogue between past and present, light and shadow, privacy and connection. Kart Projects has skillfully transformed a once-neglected terrace into a vibrant and adaptable home, demonstrating that intelligent design and a commitment to resourcefulness can create spaces that are both beautiful and deeply functional. In a city increasingly defined by its density, House B stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful intervention, a luminous beacon of contemporary family life within Melbourne’s historic fabric.
