When you buy a leather jacket on sale in the latest designs from a reputable shop, you want to take good care of it, and if it gets damaged due to a tear, here’s a list of what you will need in the first place for a DIY repair.

  • Sewing needle
  • Fingernail scissors or seam ripper
  • Fabric scrap
  • Fabric glue
  • Scotch tape or painters tape

How to Repair A Tear in Your Leather Jacket — DIY Guide

1. Reset the ripped leather edges:  With the blunt end of the needle, put the torn leather back into place as nicely as you can. Now apply the tape over the tear to hold it in place. Before you apply the tape, make sure you press it on your skin first to ensure that excess glue is removed.

2. Check the tear from the interior:  Turn the jacket inside out and hold the area where the leather is ripped. Check for any seam near the tear. If there is one, use the seam ripper to neatly open up the seam on the inside of the tear. If there is no seam, use the fingernail scissors to carefully cut a hole into the lining to access the torn leather part.

3. Patch using the fabric: One way to repair leather jacket tears is by using PVC patches. These patches are made of durable, water-resistant material and can be easily applied to damaged areas using glue or a sewing machine. You can even customize them like designed by 4incustompatch to make the fabric look cooler. These patches provide a quick and easy solution for small tears, and can even be used to cover up larger holes or rips.

4. Repair on the exterior:  Turn the jacket outside again. Remove the tape. Gently open the tear edges and use a gumdrop to glue between the fabric and the torn leather edges. Wipe away all the excess gum. Leave the patch to set and dry for several hours. Do not use a hairdryer or any other heat source to dry it fast as hot air or other heat sources will permanently damage the leather.

5. Close the repair on the inside: After the patch has dried completely, turn the jacket inside-out to stitch the hole in the lining to close it. You do not bother too much about it as it is concealed for the most part, and only you are aware of it.
