Príncipe Real, once a traditional Lisbon neighborhood, has blossomed into a hub for cosmopolitan gastronomy. Nestled within this vibrant district is Imanol, a restaurant offering a contemporary take on Basque culinary traditions. Designed by LADO Arquitectura e Design, Imanol’s interior is a striking blend of minimalist aesthetics and industrial chic, creating a unique dining experience.
LADO’s design transformed the building’s ground floor and basement into a sleek and modern space while respecting its existing structure. A large glass façade acts as a permeable barrier, dissolving the distinction between the bustling streetscape and the restaurant’s inviting atmosphere. This transparency draws passersby in, offering a glimpse of the dynamic culinary activity within.
The interior is defined by a restrained yet impactful material palette, with stainless steel as the dominant element. Walls, ceilings, and fixed furniture are clad in this cool, reflective material, establishing a distinctly industrial aesthetic. The focal point of the space is a long stainless-steel counter topped with polyethylene, resembling a giant cutting board, complemented by fixed stainless-steel stools. A custom-designed stainless-steel light fixture hangs above, illuminating the culinary action below.
In stark contrast to the cool steel, a deep oxblood red floor injects warmth and intensity into the space. The low ceiling, lined with polished stainless steel, creates a subtle mirrored effect, amplifying the light and creating an illusion of greater spaciousness. This reflective surface also captures the energy and movement of the diners, adding another layer of dynamism to the environment. The interplay between the cool steel and the warm red creates a compelling visual contrast, making the space feel both modern and inviting.
The layout is designed for both intimacy and efficiency. Twenty seats are arranged along the counter, fostering interaction with the chefs, while 18 standing spaces along the wall encourage a more casual, convivial atmosphere, echoing the Basque tradition of informal bar dining. This configuration maximizes space while promoting social interaction.
A unique feature of Imanol is the individual light buttons provided for each patron, whether seated or standing. These red buttons allow guests to easily summon staff, ensuring seamless and attentive service. The dynamic interplay of these lights turning on and off throughout the evening adds a subtle visual element to the overall ambiance.
LADO Arquitectura e Design has successfully created a space that transcends the typical restaurant experience. By combining bold material choices, minimalist design principles, and a layout that prioritizes connection and visibility, Imanol has become more than just a place to eat. It is a vibrant cultural and architectural statement, contributing to the dynamic urban fabric of Lisbon’s Príncipe Real. Imanol offers a modern interpretation of Basque culinary tradition within a striking and memorable setting.
