In the heart of Prague, Loft VNG 903 captivates with its striking combination of (post)industrial design and the charm of early 20th-century modernism. Crafted by S K U L L studio and brought to fruition by the artistic partnership of Matěj Hajek and Bet Orten, this unique space defies traditional boundaries, serving as both a residence and an art installation. It is designed for the imaginative “Globetrotter”—a visionary, a time traveler, and a creator of the future.
This loft features versatile spaces that can seamlessly transition from formal environments to vibrant, club-like atmospheres. Its design is a harmonious fusion of modernism, futurism, and functionalism, characterized by clean lines, dynamic energy, aerodynamic shapes, and soft, rounded corners. Within its industrial framework, the loft pays homage to the modernist ideals of the First Republic era, creating a dialogue between past and present.
The interior design captures the spirit of an imaginary hero—a visionary and globetrotter who navigates the complexities of the modern age with precision. This character’s journey is not confined to history; instead, he embodies the creativity and capability to shape the future. Central to this concept is the idea of ‘co-creation,’ which plays a pivotal role in the thoughtful arrangement of spatial functions throughout the loft.
The heart of this space is the expansive central living area, which aligns along a central axis. It features a kitchen with a bar island, a spacious dining and conference table, and a retractable projection screen that cleverly conceals the panoramic strip windows, providing a view of the covered parking garage—an area cherished by the car collector who resides there.
The life of their imaginary hero revolves around meeting and connecting with inspiring individuals, where the excitement fluctuates between formal and informal gatherings. As the last rays of the sun fade, the atmosphere effortlessly shifts from a representative setting to that of a lively club.
The defining characteristic of the loft is its vast open space, where movable walls and curtains enable flexible arrangements while maintaining a sense of openness and airiness.
Built-in elements enhance the living area and contribute to the dynamics of the space. The floor acts as an elevated gallery—a bridge that also accommodates a guest bed. Hidden within this bridge is a walk-through dressing room, along with separate facilities that include a shower and a toilet.
The club lounge exudes a relaxed ambiance, featuring plush sofas, a conference table, and a geometric library that invites creativity. Formalities are cast aside in this inviting space, where large-format windows and glass doors seamlessly connect the indoors to the veranda, enhancing the sense of openness. The glow of red neon lights adds a touch of nostalgia, reminiscent of a night drive through an unfamiliar city.
In this loft, the generous layout highlights the placement of an enamel bathtub nestled between the lounge and the bedroom. The Globetrotter, a true connoisseur of pleasure, steps directly from the bath onto the balcony, clad in a robe and savoring his favorite Boulevardier.
The interior is thoughtfully designed with a flexible user program in mind. The Globetrotter enjoys his “splendid isolation” within the loft, indulging in intellectual pursuits. The open-plan design, free from rigid partitions, provides ample space for his thoughts to soar. Periodically, this contemplative individual transforms into the host of lively salons.
The spatial arrangement is crafted to facilitate social gatherings in a club-like atmosphere. The dining area, conference space, bar, and lounge function harmoniously as a cohesive unit, ensuring that guests feel at the heart of the action no matter where they are. For those seeking private conversations or a moment of solitude, an elevated gallery level offers a serene retreat, allowing one to discreetly oversee the bustling activity below.
The Globetrotter is not a mere dreamer clinging to the past. For him, recycling and upcycling embody modern elegance. The light-transmitting panels in the dressing area, bathrooms, and doorways serve as a prototype of innovative recycled plastic solutions. This bold approach reflects his adventurous spirit, much like the jazz melodies that play on his vintage vinyl record player.
