Blok, a rustic retreat nestled atop a natural climbing wall in the heart of Mount Le Maelstrom in Lac-Beauport, Canada, provides the ideal refuge for those seeking adventure and communion with nature. Designed by Quinzhee Architecture, this unique project seamlessly integrates with its rugged surroundings, offering climbers unparalleled access to challenging routes while simultaneously providing a cozy and comfortable haven to rest and recharge.
This monolithic structure, with its striking asymmetrical shape and grey stucco finish, evokes the image of a climbing block, complete with sharp, angular edges. The façade is adorned with irregularly arranged openings that resemble climbing holds, drawing the gaze and encouraging exploration, much like a challenging climbing route.
Inside, the square layout reveals heated interiors that flow effortlessly into sheltered outdoor spaces. This design not only expands the living area but also creates an immersive experience, allowing residents to connect deeply with the surrounding nature.
Upon entering through the truncated corner of the building, visitors are greeted by outdoor spaces that provide protection from the elements and privacy from the outside world. The ground floor is designed with walls that allow climbers to hone their skills, while a spa area offers a tranquil retreat for relaxation between training sessions.
On the upper level, a terrace emerges as a welcoming space for cooking and sharing meals, all set against the backdrop of the surrounding natural beauty. This area fosters a sense of community and connection to the outdoors, enhancing the overall living experience.
The heated interiors extend across multiple levels, with the ground floor bedrooms providing a serene and intimate atmosphere, enveloped by the surrounding forest. This design choice ensures a peaceful retreat for rest and rejuvenation.
Meanwhile, the upper living spaces are bathed in natural light, offering unobstructed views of the landscape. A spacious mezzanine above the kitchen accommodates additional guests, making it an ideal spot for gatherings and socializing.
Throughout the structure, wood cladding creates a visual harmony between the interior and exterior spaces, contrasting beautifully with the raw, mineral quality of the building’s envelope. This thoughtful design fosters a seamless connection with nature while providing comfort and functionality.
