Located in the vibrant Milan‘s NoLo district, Casa SA is a 70 square meter apartment that has been transformed by local Kick Office into a space that maximizes brightness and enhances spatial continuity. Originally, the space was divided into five small rooms connected by a single, narrow hallway, creating a sense of confinement. This posed a significant challenge for the designers, who sought to breathe new life into the apartment.
Through their innovative design approach, Kick Office has redefined the space, turning it into a bright and open living environment that emphasizes spatial continuity. The result is a seamless flow throughout the apartment, where light floods in and creates an inviting atmosphere, showcasing the potential of even the most challenging layouts.
One of the main design features that showcases the expansion of space is the exposed beam-column structure, made from rough concrete. This brutalist element creates a striking contrast with the existing floor, which is made of polychrome marble in a palladiana pattern. The unique beauty of the floor serves as the inspiration for the overall color palette of the apartment.
The apartment’s centerpiece is a striking rust-colored varnished box that elegantly divides the kitchen from the living room. This unique structure serves as both a visual and physical barrier, yet it fosters a sense of dialogue between the two spaces.
Two gracefully arched openings lead from the entrance to a cozy reading nook by the window, ensuring a smooth flow between the areas. Additionally, a porthole in the box offers a direct glimpse into the living room, further strengthening the connection between these inviting environments.
To create a sense of harmony throughout the apartment, a forest-green resin floor was chosen for the hallway, bathroom, and bedroom areas. This choice helps to mitigate the rhythmic pattern of the palladiana floor and creates a more intimate and peaceful atmosphere in these spaces.
One unexpected surprise in the apartment is the bathroom, which features a shower covered in a texture of powder-pink ceramic tiles. This pop of color adds a playful and whimsical touch to the overall design scheme.
By breaking away from the traditional layout and enhancing the spatial continuity, Casa SA demonstrates how a small apartment can be transformed into a bright and open living space. The attention to detail in the design choices, such as the exposed beam-column structure and the use of different flooring materials, adds depth and character to the apartment. Casa SA is a testament to the creativity and skill of Kick Office in creating unique and inspiring living spaces.
