The Maestro António Taborda Apartment, a modest Gaioleiro-style building in the heart of Lisbon, Portugal, posed a unique architectural challenge to Aurora Arquitectos. The irregular interior geometry of the space defied conventional spatial organization. Rather than a complete overhaul, the design team focused on strategic interventions to enhance the apartment’s functionality, character, and overall comfort.
The heart of the project lies in the reorganization of the bathroom and kitchen. By carefully reconfiguring these spaces, the designers aimed to optimize their layout and improve their aesthetic appeal. The result is a more efficient and visually pleasing environment.
The bedroom, once dominated by an irregular shape, now boasts a striking bed headboard that introduces a sense of order and orthogonality to the space. This simple yet impactful design element creates a more defined and restful atmosphere.
The entranceway, often overlooked in traditional renovations, was transformed into a distinct and welcoming space. By widening the entrance and creating a dedicated area for undressing and storing belongings, the designers elevated the entryway’s functionality and character.
A custom-designed closet, nestled within the bedroom, offers a private and luxurious storage solution. This intimate space, separate from the rest of the apartment, provides a sense of calm and exclusivity.
One of the most innovative aspects of the project is the introduction of a window-object between the main living room and the sitting room. This architectural element visually connects the two spaces, creating a sense of openness and continuity. The window-object not only improves the flow of light and air but also enhances the overall spatial experience.
