Uchronia’s Cafe Shin: A Vibrant Fusion of Parisian Design and Korean Coffee Culture

Uchronia's Cafe Shin: A Vibrant Fusion of Parisian Design and Korean Coffee Culture

French studio Uchronia has unveiled the interiors of Cafe Shin in Paris, a vibrant homage to Seoul‘s dynamic coffee culture. At the heart of the cafe lies a striking coffee counter, elegantly topped with a washi-paper roof that evokes the essence of a traditional Korean house. Nestled on Rue des Petites-Écuries in the bustling 10th arrondissement, this cafe is a celebration of both design and culinary artistry.

The design team, led by Sebban, has ingeniously integrated an open kitchen into the layout, where delectable pastries and kimbap seaweed rolls are crafted. The central coffee counter, constructed from smooth light wood, serves as a focal point, while the handmade washi paper envelops the gabled roof and the surrounding walls, offering a modern interpretation of the classic hanok houses of Korea.

Adding to the inviting atmosphere, chunky coloured-ash stools designed by Oryu Elements line the counter, their vibrant hues reflecting off a gleaming base adorned with hammered metal sheets. This combination of textures and colors creates a lively yet sophisticated environment for patrons to enjoy their coffee.

Towards the rear of Cafe Shin, Uchronia has designed a cozy seating nook inspired by South Korean jjimjilbang bathhouses. Accessible via small steps, this nook features blocky built-in seating that mirrors the aesthetic of saunas, all clad in swimming pool-style blue-ombre tiles from Dutch brand Palet. This unique design element adds a playful touch to the overall ambiance.

Scattered throughout the nook are colorful, flower-shaped cushions that embody Uchronia’s bold design philosophy, inviting guests to relax and unwind. A chunky ash stool complements the seating area, enhancing the comfort and style of this intimate space.

The same eye-catching blue-ombre tiles that adorn the nook also grace the cafe’s facade, creating a cohesive look. Additionally, these tiles are utilized to craft a wall-mounted shelf and bar counter in the main room, providing both extra storage and seating for diners. Cafe Shin is the brainchild of two friends, French chef Julien Sebbag and South Korean pastry chef Shin Eun Jung, who aimed to redefine the traditional coffee shop experience with their innovative approach.
