Breathing New Life into West London: A Harmonious Renovation by OWN LONDON

Breathing New Life into West London: A Harmonious Renovation by OWN LONDON

Dean Hearne

In the heart of West London, a Victorian-era house has undergone a remarkable transformation, courtesy of OWN LONDON. What was once a fragmented and ill-conceived space has been meticulously reimagined into a harmonious and light-filled family home. OWN LONDON’s approach was one of considered intervention, stripping the property back to its core and rebuilding it with a focus on flow, connection, and a subtle sense of grandeur.

The renovation involved significant structural alterations, including a striking new glazed façade and a rear extension that seamlessly integrates with the original structure. This bold move allowed OWN LONDON to completely reconfigure the layout, creating a logical sequence of spaces that breathe new life into the home. A key element of this reconfiguration was the relocation of the kitchen from a poorly conceived extension to a central position, connecting it effortlessly to the living areas and becoming the true heart of the home.

The design narrative unfolds through a series of carefully curated spaces, each with its own distinct character. The formal drawing room, anchored by a beautifully preserved bay window, exudes classic elegance. In contrast, the snug offers a more intimate and playful atmosphere. Bathed in a deep blue hue, the snug features an Anna Alba-inspired ceiling wallpaper by Christopher Farr, framed by a striking cornice, creating a dramatic and inviting retreat.

The orangery, now a light-filled everyday space, showcases OWN LONDON’s attention to detail. Italian terracotta tiles by Cristina Celestino for Fornace Brioni, laid seamlessly without grout, create a warm and organic texture that echoes the exterior brickwork, blurring the lines between inside and out.

Throughout the home, original features have been thoughtfully preserved and enhanced. The entrance hallway’s ornate moulding, for example, has been given a new hierarchy, subtly reinforcing the home’s inherent grandeur. OWN LONDON also introduced curved architectural elements, most notably in the kitchen, which playfully complement the existing cornices, adding a touch of contemporary flair.

The kitchen, finished in Little Greene’s Obsidian Green 216, is a demonstration of the studio’s commitment to both aesthetics and functionality. A bespoke island anchors the space, while Arabescato Verde marble countertops add a touch of luxury. Understanding the clients’ passion for food, OWN LONDON meticulously planned the layout, ensuring the hob, sink, and prep areas are perfectly positioned for culinary creativity. A large arched opening, a new design detail introduced by the studio, further enhances the connection between the kitchen and the adjacent living spaces.

The dining room embraces a sophisticated mid-century aesthetic. Amber-coloured chairs surround the dining table, while a green-accented rug from Stark Carpet adds a pop of colour. Two tall cabinets provide discreet storage without overwhelming the space, emphasizing the room’s generous ceiling height. Rather than enlarging the fireplaces, OWN LONDON subtly reduced their scale, achieving a harmonious balance within the room.

Upstairs, the master suite has been dramatically transformed. The removal of a redundant internal staircase has restored a sense of one-level grandeur. A wraparound headboard, upholstered in a luxurious Dedar tapestry fabric, extends wall to wall, visually anchoring the expansive bedroom. The master bathroom is a masterclass in material composition. Calacatta Retro marble, with its strategically placed veining, frames the central vanity and bath, subtly zoning the space and creating a spa-like sanctuary.

OWN LONDON’s renovation of this West London home is a prime example of their ability to blend classic and contemporary elements seamlessly. By stripping the house back to its bones and reimagining its layout, they have created a home that is not only beautiful but also highly functional and perfectly tailored to the clients’ lifestyle. This project showcases their sensitivity to the existing architecture, their attention to detail, and their commitment to creating spaces that are both grand and inviting.
