What to Consider Before Building a Deck

What to Consider Before Building a Deck

Installing a deck in your backyard can really open up the space and make it much more usable, and it’s something that many people will want to do, especially as the process of installing isn’t too complicated. Yet before you go ahead and buy the materials you need or hire someone to come and help you put your deck in, there are plenty of things to consider. Let’s take a look at some of them to ensure you’re making all the right choices when it comes to building your deck.

Function and Purpose

One of the most important things you’ll need to know in advance before you build your deck is its function and purpose; in other words, what do you see yourself using it for? Once you know this, you can determine the right materials, what size of deck you need, and even where it’s going to be located.

Most of the time, a deck is there to enable people to enjoy their outside space more, but how do you intend to do that? Will it be a dining area? Somewhere to relax with a good book or some music? Will it be a safe space for the kids to play? Work this out first, and the build will go much more smoothly.

What to Consider Before Building a Deck

Location

Sometimes it’s very obvious where your deck should go – maybe there is one area it will fit, or you want it to be attached to the house or in an area that gets the most sun. In other cases, you might need to think a little harder about where it should be situated.

Knowing how you’ll use your deck is crucial, as we’ve said. If it’s for entertaining, you’ll probably want it closer to the house. If it’s for relaxing, a quieter spot in the yard could be ideal. You’ll also need to think about environmental factors; how much sunlight will you get, for example? It’s great to pick a warm and sunny spot, but that also has shade, although if this is not possible, you can invest in outdoor umbrellas to ensure the deck is comfortable and safe in all weathers.

Budget

There are many different decking materials available, and each one will have its own cost associated with it. Some are, as you might expect, more expensive than others. This is why it’s crucial to have a good idea of your budget before you start shopping for materials or choosing a deck to be built.

A larger deck might have to be made of cheaper materials than a smaller one, for example, and if you’re hiring a professional to install the deck, then you’ll have to factor labor costs into the calculations too. You might even need to make some changes in your yard to accommodate the deck. Make your budget first, and then check that everything you want can be done for the price. If not, you may need to compromise by doing the work yourself, changing the choice of material, or making the deck smaller.
