The revitalization of Belgrade’s historic Milan Vapa Paper Mill into the new Nikola Tesla Museum, a project spearheaded by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) in collaboration with Serbian Bureau Cube Partners (BCP), marks a significant intervention in the city’s architectural fabric. Selected through an anonymous design competition, this ambitious undertaking transcends the typical museum commission, offering a unique opportunity to weave together industrial heritage, contemporary design principles, and the enduring legacy of Nikola Tesla. The project promises to be more than just a repository of artifacts; it will be a dynamic spatial experience, a testament to Tesla’s profound influence on modern technology, and a compelling addition to Belgrade’s evolving architectural landscape.

The choice of the Milan Vapa Paper Mill, built in 1924 as Serbia’s first modern factory, adds a crucial layer of historical context. Protected by the Belgrade Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, the abandoned structure, a powerful symbol of Serbia’s industrial past, is being meticulously preserved. ZHA’s design skillfully integrates the mill’s existing fabric – its original facades, vaulted ceilings, and robust masonry – into a contemporary museum experience. This sensitive approach respects the building’s heritage while adapting it for its new purpose.

The design’s conceptual core draws direct inspiration from Tesla’s groundbreaking research on magnetic fields and wireless energy transfer. Dynamic elliptical curves, radiating outwards from the factory’s prominent chimney, become a visual motif throughout the museum. These flowing forms symbolize the connectivity and energy inherent in Tesla’s work, creating a powerful dialogue between the inventor’s ideas and the architectural form. The chimney, a defining feature of the site, is not merely preserved but becomes a central point of reference, anchoring the design in its historical context.

A new circular entrance on the western facade welcomes visitors into a dramatic triple-height central atrium. This grand space serves as the museum’s circulatory heart, connecting the various narratives and culminating at the Tesla memorial at the eastern end. Inside, ellipsoidal openings carved into the existing factory walls create spherical voids, offering extended sightlines and facilitating a seamless flow of movement throughout the museum. This interplay of curves and voids creates a dynamic and engaging spatial experience, echoing the dynamism of Tesla’s inventions.

The museum’s interior spaces are designed to showcase Tesla’s life and work in an engaging and accessible manner. The first-floor galleries will house a comprehensive exhibition of Tesla’s inventions and legacy, employing historical artifacts, interactive displays, and immersive presentations. Temporary galleries will host a rotating program of exhibitions, ensuring a constantly evolving experience for returning visitors. A highlight will undoubtedly be the Tesla Electronic Transformer Gallery, featuring a 12-million-volt transformer, promising an electrifying encounter with Tesla’s pioneering work in high-voltage electricity.

Beyond the exhibition spaces, the museum will offer a range of amenities, including a café, a multipurpose hall, and a rooftop restaurant with panoramic views of the Sava River. These additions transform the museum into a vibrant social space, encouraging visitors to linger and engage with the surrounding urban context.
Sustainability is a core principle of the project. The design incorporates passive design strategies, renewable energy sources, and geothermal systems to minimize the museum’s environmental footprint. This commitment to sustainability aligns with Tesla’s own forward-thinking approach to technology and its potential to benefit humanity.
The project extends beyond the museum building itself with the creation of Nikola Tesla Square, a new public space connecting the museum to the surrounding Belgrade Waterfront. Inspired by Tesla’s concepts of electromagnetic fields, the square will feature flowing pathways, plazas, and gardens, creating a welcoming and accessible public realm. This extension of the museum into the urban fabric reinforces its role as a cultural catalyst, fostering community engagement and celebrating Tesla’s enduring legacy.
